Binoculars provide a three-dimensional image.The two views, presented to each of the viewer’s eyes from slightly different viewpoints produce a merged view which gives an impression of depth. By using both eyes perceived visual acuity also significantly increased.

Binoculars often have adjustable magnification. Zoom binoculars provide you  with a wide range of magnifications, usually by moving a “zoom” lever.

Most early binoculars used Galilean optics which used a convex objective and a concave eyepiece lens.

Improved image and higher magnification is achieved in a construction binoculars employing Keplerian optics
which has the disadvantage that they invert the image.

Porro prism binoculars use a Porro prism to erect the image. Roof-prisms are designed create an instrument that is narrower and more compact than Porro prisms

Binoculars are usually designed for the specific applications.
Magnification.  A magnification of factor 7 produces an image as if one were 7 times closer to the object.
Objective diameter determines how much light can be gathered to form an image.
Field of view is how many feet or meters in width will be seen at 1,000 yards.
Exit pupil concentrates the light gathered by the objective into a beam.
Eye relief is the distance from the rear eyepiece lens to the exit pupil or eye point.

Binoculars that are used to view objects that are not at a fixed distance must have a focusing arrangement which changes the distance between ocular and objective lenses

Hand-held binoculars range from small 3 x 10 Galilean opera glasses, used in theaters, to glasses with 7 to 12 diameters magnification and 30 to 50 mm objectives for typical outdoor use

Binoculars are widely used by amateur astronomers, bird watchers, and hunters.

Binoculars for bird watching need to give adequate magnification, a sharp image, and be durable enough to withstand occasional bumps and scratches.

Hunting glasses which are used from dawn to dusk, need to be good in all light conditions with limited night vision. They should be lightweight and have a smaller magnification, and larger objective.
